Osteopathy during pregnancy and after birth

Ekaterina Gashenko · osteopath, P-DTR, kinesiologist

During pregnancy the body changes very quickly. The centre of gravity shifts, the load on the lower back grows, hormones make the ligaments more elastic and the pelvis prepares for birth. These are normal processes, but they can come with discomfort.

What I most often work with: lower back and back pain, heaviness and tension in the pelvis, discomfort around the ribs and diaphragm (when deep breathing becomes difficult), general muscular tension and anxiety.

Work with the pelvis and ligaments. The goal is not to put bones back in place but to help the tissues distribute the load evenly and restore mobility where it is lacking. When the pelvis and lower back move more freely, it is easier for the body to carry the added weight.

Preparing for birth. Gentle work helps release excess tension and improve the mobility of the structures involved in labour. This is not a guarantee of an easy birth — no method works that way — but it is a way to approach it in a more comfortable state.

Safety. I work without forceful techniques, at any term, taking your condition and wellbeing into account. We choose a comfortable position — most often on the side or semi-seated. No pressure on the belly.

After birth. Recovery is a separate task: the body returns to its previous biomechanics while new loads appear — carrying the baby, feeding, lack of sleep. Gentle work helps release accumulated tension in the back, neck and shoulders.

Important. Osteopathy complements but does not replace your obstetrician's care. With any alarming symptoms — bleeding, increased tone, severe pain, changes in the baby's movements — see your doctor first. I always work alongside medicine.
