An osteopath for newborns: why and when to come

Ekaterina Gashenko · osteopath, P-DTR, kinesiologist

Birth is hard mechanical work for both mother and baby. Passing through the birth canal, the baby is under load: the skull bones are mobile and overlap, the body compresses and rotates. Usually the body copes on its own, but sometimes tension remains.

What I look at: muscle tone (increased or uneven), asymmetry — for example, the baby consistently turns the head to one side or lies in a curved position — restless sleep and difficulty relaxing.

These are not diagnoses but signs that the body finds it hard to settle into a comfortable position. The osteopath's task is to help release excess tension so the child can move more freely and rest better.

How the appointment goes. Very gently and always with the parents present. Cranial techniques are not manipulation but delicate following of the tissues. No cracking, no abrupt movements, no pain. The baby may sleep, feed or lie in mother's arms — that is normal and even convenient.

When to come: after difficult, rapid or prolonged labour, after a caesarean section, if vacuum or forceps were used, if you notice persistent asymmetry of the head or body position, marked restlessness and sleep difficulties.

You can come from the first days of life — the earlier, the more plastic the tissues and the gentler the work needed. But it is not too late later either.

Important. Osteopathy does not replace paediatric and neurological follow-up and does not cancel their prescriptions. If I see signs that need medical attention, I will say so directly and recommend a relevant specialist. Appointment for children under one year — 10,000 ₽.
